How do you get tested for herpes?

I'm going to get tested for herpes, or any general std's What is the process for a woman? Should I be nervous? And how would they test for oral herpes?

  1. I hope this helps: http://www.webmd.com/genital-herpes/herpes-tests :)
  2. Doctors can diagnose genital herpes by looking at visible sores if the outbreak is typical, and by taking a sample from the sore for testing in a lab. Herpes can be difficult to diagnose between outbreaks. Blood tests, which detect HSV-1 or HSV-2 antibodies, can help to detect herpes in people without symptoms or during the time between outbreaks. You can go to the free clinic to get tested for free! Good Luck!
  3. When most women are tested for general STD's it's usually a pap smear. I wouldn't be nervous about the process, it doesn't really hurt it's just uncomfortable for about 30 seconds to a minute. Most of the time they test for oral herpes or HSV type 1 through an antibody test. An antibody test can only be done with a blood sample. In a general STD test I don't think they will test for this.
