Herpes

How can it be known if a child has caught herpes through child birth?

A friend of mine has found out that she has genital herpes . She deliver all her children through vaginal birth, oldest child being 16 and youngest 4 . How would she know if her children have genital herpes.

  1. the definitive test is a blood test
  2. It would have been known right away at birth if she passed it on....there would have been serious health problems with the child shortly after birth, so if they are 16 and 4 now she didn't pass it on. When she was in labour and having exams if she was experiencing an outbreak the nurses and doctors would have seen that and done a c-section.
  3. Plenty of people have herpes without ever knowing it. Sometimes there aren't any symptoms. If they have ever gotten cold sores, that's a sign of herpes. A mother could pass herpes on to her child even if she wasn't having an outbreak. i think it's called asymptomatic shedding or something, but it's not likely especially if her doctors put her on medication just before she gave birth. But she should have her kids get a blood test just to make sure so they don't accidentally infect anyone else.
