Herpes

Could the Epstein Barr Virus make a herpes test positive since the EBV is a herpes simplex virus??

I have had the EBV & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for a few years. I had a check up and the herpes test came back positive. Since the EBV is a herpes simplex virus- could that be the reason for the positive results. I have never exhibited signs for symptoms of the oral herpes

  1. It depends what test was used to detect the herpes virus. A simple, cheaper and less specific test might detect the same characteristics in the two different virus types. The more specific the test the more accurate. As long as you are getting the appropriate treatment hopefully you won't worry about it too much.
  2. NO!!!! They both have specific serologic tests. test for EBV - EBV serology(IgM and IgG) and test for Herpes simplex is HSV 1 and 2 (IgG and IgM). Sometimes oral herpes are asymtomatic. ...trust ze docto ;)
  3. no it cant. EBV is similar structurally to HSV but there is no cross positivity in their blood tests
